Beijing Winter Olympics featured three competition zones: the Beijing Zone, the Yanqing Zone, and the Zhangjiakou Zone. For the construction projects in the Zhangjiakou Zone, the Landscape Bridge Design Team from Architects & Engineers Co., Ltd. of Southeast University led the design of the "Ice and Snow Five-Ring Bridge" at Taizicheng along the Yanqing-Chongli Expressway—a major supporting project for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Professor Ding Jianming of the School of Transportation at Southeast University explained that considering the bridge deck could not be too wide, the bridge was designed as two separate structures with upstream and downstream traffic separated. Taking into account the topography and landforms, and after repeated on-site surveys, the final scheme adopted a staggered arrangement with different span configurations for the two structures—perfectly accommodating the obliquely intersecting road and the winding stream. The bridge harmonizes with the surrounding terrain and natural landscape, embodying the design philosophy of "adapting measures to local conditions."
"The bridge design integrates Chinese elements, Olympic elements, and ice and snow elements, with its greatest distinctive feature being the incorporation of numerous traditional Chinese cultural elements," explained Ding Jianming. As the bridge serves as the entrance and gateway to the Chongli Winter Olympic Village, the design introduced the concept of a portal. The moon gate (yue dong men) in classical Chinese architecture and gardens is a non-restrictive, decorative passageway used for partitioning and ornamentation. This bridge incorporates the traditional Chinese "moon gate" into its structural design—the circular, moon-shaped gateway merging the intimate world inside with the vast world outside, reflecting the Chinese cultural philosophy of "harmony between humanity and nature."Upon closer inspection, each bridge tower consists of inner and outer concentric ellipses, symbolizing the Olympic spirit of "One World, One Dream." The space between the two rings is connected by snowflake-patterned linkages, forming an integrated whole that echoes the Winter Olympics' ice and snow sports theme. The five ring-shaped towers collectively create the five-ring emblem, with aerodynamic fairings between each tower establishing longitudinal connections, symbolizing the close interconnection of the world. The outer ring of each tower adopts a silver-white design, while the inner ring incorporates the five colors of the Olympic rings.
